For the last few years the Videogame History Museum has been a travelling exhibit documenting some of the remarkable moments in gaming history all across the United States. Unfortunately, this nomadic nature has made it fairly difficult for gamers outside of the US to get to the exhibition outside of special events such as E3 and the PAX expo.
Happily there is now solid news that the museum, or at least a large portion of it, is set to settle in Texas for the foreseeable future. From April 2015 the National Videogame Museum 1.0 will be taking residence at the Frisco Discovery Centre, with the local government of the area also pledging to spend $800,000 to ensure that the area is ready for the eventual move.
When there the museum will take up over 100,000 square feet, which will still not be enough room to include the entire collection. As such it is most likely that exhibits will be rotated on a regular basis to give visitors as much variety as possible. One exception will likely be a classic arcade games room, that will give visitors the opportunity to play many classic games from the past on the machines that first made them possible.
Education us also considered to be an extremely important part of the museum and there will be sections dedicated to the science, mathematics and programming knowledge that goes into each and every game. This will make it a definite destination of choice for budding developers, especially as regular workshops will also be a feature. It is also more than likely that a few famous figures from the industry will put in appearances to lend a voice to the museum and provide some insight into the various collections housed within.
The museum finally stabilising and receiving such amazing support from the local government is just a further sign of how ingrained videogames have become in popular culture. Hopefully the venue will become extremely popular and the company behind the museum already have a view to expanding the exhibit with the help of backers within the industry once it has become more established.
One thing is for sure. A ticket to Texas has just become a very attractive proposition for games the world over.
